Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Usually yes — X (Twitter), SMS and meta descriptions count spaces. Some forms and academic limits exclude them, so the counter shows both numbers.
What are common character limits?
Posts on X allow 280 characters, SMS messages 160 (or 70 with emoji), Google typically shows about 150–160 characters of a meta description and 50–60 of a title tag, and Instagram captions allow 2,200.
How are emoji counted?
An emoji looks like one character but may be stored as several code units. Platforms differ: X counts most emoji as two characters. For strict limits, leave a little headroom when using emoji.
Is the text I paste stored?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our servers.
Character Counter
A character counter helps you quickly determine how many characters are contained in a piece of text. This can be useful when writing social media posts, essays, messages, titles, descriptions and other content with length restrictions.
What does this character counter count?
- Characters — Every character in your text, including spaces.
- Characters without spaces — Characters excluding whitespace.
- Words — The number of words in your text.
- Lines — The number of lines in your text.
- Sentences — An estimate based on sentence-ending punctuation.
- Paragraphs — Separate blocks of text divided by blank lines.
Is my text stored?
No. The counter works directly in your browser. Your text does not need to be uploaded to a server to calculate the statistics.
