Frequently asked questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate and divide by 100, then add it on. For example, 8.25% tax on 100 is 8.25, so the total is 108.25.
How do I find the tax included in a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the pre-tax price, then subtract. A 108.25 total at 8.25% contains 100 of price and 8.25 of tax — not 8.25% of 108.25.
Does this work for VAT?
Yes. VAT and sales tax use the same arithmetic. Enter your VAT rate, such as 20% in the UK, and choose add or remove.
Why does my receipt differ by a cent?
Shops often round tax per item or per line, while this calculator rounds once on the total. Small rounding differences are normal.
Add or remove sales tax in seconds
Whether you're checking a receipt, pricing products or filling in an expense claim, you often need to split a price into its pre-tax amount and the tax. This calculator works in both directions and handles any rate, from US state sales taxes to VAT and GST.
A common mistake
To find the tax inside a total, don't simply take the tax rate of the total. At 20% VAT, a 120 total contains 20 of tax (120 ÷ 1.2 = 100), not 24. The calculator uses the correct division automatically.
