Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean adds all values and divides by how many there are. The median is the middle value when sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when a few very large or small values would distort the mean — house prices and salaries are classic examples.
What is standard deviation?
It measures how spread out the numbers are around the mean. Use the population version when you have every value and the sample version when your numbers are a sample of a larger group.
Can I paste a column from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Copy the column and paste it — each line becomes a number.
More than just the mean
Averages summarise a set of numbers, but different averages tell different stories. This calculator gives the mean, median and mode together with the range and standard deviation so you can see both the centre and the spread of your data.
